Wood is highly versatile, has good heat insulation properties and strong. Malaysia has unlimited selection of timbers from which to choose where timbers have been utilised in various applications. There are so many types of woods used for different applications like Balau for decking, Merbau and Kempas for flooring, and Red Meranti for doors and windows. Moreover, there more timber products such as composite producst like LVL (Laminated vener lumber), plywood, and MDF (Medium density fibre). Thus, we have woods being categorized into heavy, medium, light hardwood and etc which can be seen at the table on the left.

Usage of timber for structural purposes must be carefully thought of as different species of timber have varieties of strength. Thus, MTIB has categorized timber into 4 groups which are Group A,B,C and D and SG 1-7. Group A: Extremely Strong Group B: Very Strong Group C: Strong Group D: Weak SG 1: Most quality, strongest, very durable SG 7: Least quality, weakest, not very durable see table below for references |
