Scientific/ Botanical Name: Neobalanocarpus heimii (Dipterocarpacae) Distribution: Southeast Asia Average dried weight/Air-dry density: 915-980 kg/m3 Classification: Heavy hardwood Colour/Appearance: Light yellow-brown with a distinct green tinge, when exposed to sunlight, it will darkens to dark purple-brown/red. Grain/ Texture: Fine texture and even spread. Grains are interlocked with shallowly to deeply (don't understand what is interlocked grain? See in Grain direction) Comments/Notes: Naturally durable and very resistant to termites attack and fungal infestation. Most popular choices as decking/flooring among hardwood species such as Balau and Merbau since Chengal wood is categorized as SG1 (referred back to hardwood species) which means that it is the strongest and most durable wood in Malaysia (certified by Malaysian Timber Industry Board.Chengal wood is considered as protected species due to uncontrolled illegal logging in Malaysia.
